Manual Therapy Techniques for Spinal Pain

Manual therapy is a collection of techniques used by physiotherapists to treat spinal pain. Hands-on techniques are used in these techniques to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and promote healing.

Spinal manipulation is one of the most commonly used manual therapy techniques for back pain. This technique entails using a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust to the affected joint to improve mobility and reduce pain. A specific thrusting technique will be used by the physiotherapist to realign the joint, restoring normal movement and reducing pain.

Mobilisation is another common manual therapy technique for spinal pain. This technique uses gentle movement to help improve the mobility of the affected joint. Slow, controlled movements will be used by the physiotherapist to help loosen any stiff or restricted joints, reducing pain and improving mobility.

Massage and myofascial release are two soft tissue techniques used to help manage spinal pain. Hands-on techniques are used in these techniques to help reduce muscle tension and spasm, which can contribute to spinal pain. Massage can help relax tight muscles, whereas myofascial release techniques can help release any adhesions or restrictions in the soft tissues.

A variety of exercises and stretches will also be used by the physiotherapist to help improve flexibility, strengthen the muscles around the spine, and promote healing. The exercises will be tailored to the patient’s specific needs and progress as the patient’s condition improves.

It’s important to remember that spinal pain can be caused by a variety of factors, and the best course of treatment will vary depending on the individual’s situation. A physiotherapist can assess your condition, identify the source of your pain, and create an individualised treatment plan that may include a combination of manual therapy techniques, exercises, and education.

Our physiotherapists at R3 Physiotherapy in Wanstead and Ilford have been trained and have experience using manual therapy techniques to help manage spinal pain. We will collaborate with you to create a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and will assist you in reducing pain and improving mobility. If you are suffering from spinal pain, please contact us to set up an appointment and take the first step toward pain-free living.
